ISLAMABAD: For foreign-qualified doctors and dentists planning their return to Pakistan’s healthcare system, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council has released the dates that may shape their entire professional year. In two important public notices, PMDC has announced the 2026 National Equivalence Board (NEB) and National Registration Examination (NRE) schedules, giving overseas graduates a definitive timeline for equivalence, registration, and clinical practice eligibility.

This is far more than an examination calendar. For thousands of Pakistani nationals who completed MBBS or BDS abroad, the newly announced schedule effectively acts as a licensing roadmap, determining when they can legally transition into hospitals, house jobs, postgraduate tracks, and general practice.

The first pressure point: NEB on May 16

PMDC has scheduled the National Equivalence Board examination for Saturday, May 16, 2026, to be conducted through Rawalpindi Medical University.

The NEB is the first critical step for candidates whose primary medical or dental qualifications were obtained outside Pakistan and require formal equivalence under PMDC standards. Before a foreign degree can be considered usable for registration, the Council uses this exam to assess whether the graduate’s academic training aligns with Pakistan’s competency benchmarks.

In practical terms, foreign MBBS and BDS holders who need recognition of their degree must first clear NEB before moving further into the registration process.

PMDC has also confirmed that the online portal, syllabus, standards, and exam structure are already available on its official platform, allowing candidates to begin focused preparation.

NRE dates announced from May to December

The second notice is likely to affect an even larger pool of candidates. PMDC has issued the full 2026 National Registration Examination schedule, covering both Step I and Step II style sessions through the year.

NRE-I
• First session: May 17, 2026
• Second session: October 11, 2026

NRE-II
• First cycle: June 27–28 and July 4–5, 2026
• Second cycle: November 28–29 and December 5–6, 2026

The NRE is the formal licensing pathway for foreign-qualified Pakistani doctors and dentists seeking full registration to practice as general practitioners in Pakistan. Unlike NEB, which focuses on equivalence, NRE is the decisive competency exam that stands between qualification and lawful patient care.

For many doctors returning from China, Central Asia, Europe, or the Middle East, this is the exam that determines whether they can move from degree holder to licensed clinician.

The confusion many foreign graduates still face

A large number of overseas graduates continue to mix up the two exams, often delaying their own registration timelines.

Here is the simplest distinction:

• NEB = foreign degree equivalence
• NRE = PMDC registration and license to practice

Depending on the country of graduation, recognition status of the institution, and PMDC’s prevailing policy, some candidates may need both examinations in sequence, while others may directly fall into the NRE track.

This distinction is crucial because misunderstanding the pathway can lead to missed registration windows and months of avoidable delay.

By releasing the dates early, PMDC has enabled candidates to plan:

  • travel to Pakistan
  • visa and documentation timelines
  • transcript attestations
  • study leave
  • coaching schedules
  • job transition planning

For many families financing overseas medical education, these dates are not just exam milestones — they are career and financial turning points.

PMDC has advised all concerned candidates to continue checking its official website for registration portal updates, syllabus revisions, and any further public notices.

For Pakistan’s returning medical talent, the race to 2026 has now officially begun.
