Abbasi Shaheed Hospital House Officers stage protest over non-payment of salaries

KARACHI: The House officers at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital staged a protest on Friday against the non-payment of their salaries, surrounding the director’s office and boycotting the Outpatient Departments (OPDs). The protest disrupted regular hospital operations, highlighting the growing frustration of young doctors struggling to manage expenses without timely remuneration.

Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr. Javed Iqbal acknowledged the difficulties faced by the doctors, assuring them that salaries for the current month would be disbursed by Friday evening.

He clarified that the pending salaries of the last four months would be released directly by the head office, stressing that the hospital administration had no direct role in the disbursement process.

Mounting pressure on healthcare workers

The delay in salaries has placed immense financial strain on house officers, who are considered the backbone of hospital services. Their role in OPDs, wards, and emergency units is critical, and continued disruptions could affect patient care across Karachi’s healthcare system.

Call for immediate action

Health experts and senior faculty members have urged the relevant authorities to address the issue on priority to prevent further protests and ensure uninterrupted patient care. Timely payment of salaries, they emphasized, is essential not only for staff welfare but also for maintaining trust within the healthcare sector.
