Sindh reports surge in heatstroke cases amid severe heatwave

KARACHI: A severe heatwave in Sindh has resulted in 393 reported cases of heatstroke between April 14 and May 18, according to data released by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Sindh. The alarming figures include 227 men, 162 women, and 4 children, underscoring the widespread human impact of the scorching temperatures gripping the province.

The worst-affected region is Shaheed Benazirabad, with a staggering 361 heatstroke cases. Other districts such as Khairpur (16 cases), Tando Allahyar (11 cases), and Matiari (4 cases) have also reported significant numbers.

• Avoid direct exposure to the sun between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
• Wear light, breathable clothing
• Seek immediate medical help in case of symptoms like dizziness, nausea, or fainting

This heatwave has also affected livestock, with 31 animal deaths reported — a concerning trend for rural communities dependent on agriculture and animal husbandry.

The current crisis highlights the urgent need for climate resilience, early warning systems, and community awareness campaigns to protect lives and livelihoods in vulnerable regions.
