Changes in temperature and rainfall influence how diseases spread—especially those carried by vectors like mosquitoes. Warmer and wetter conditions in some regions, and hotter and drier conditions in others, can both create new transmission patterns.

Research highlighted by global health collaborations such as the Lancet Countdown shows that climate variability is already expanding the reach of diseases like dengue and malaria.

At the same time, higher temperatures accelerate bacterial growth, increasing the risk of waterborne infections—particularly in areas where sanitation systems are already under pressure.

The result is a complex, evolving health threat that does not always make headlines—but steadily increases risk.

The rise of a potential “super El Niño”

Global agencies, including the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), have indicated that early signals point toward a particularly strong El Niño cycle. While the term “super El Niño” is not formally scientific, it reflects growing concern within the climate community.

Comparisons are already being drawn to the 1997–1998 event—one of the most powerful in recorded history. That cycle triggered devastating droughts, floods, and wildfires across multiple continents.

In Indonesia, millions of hectares burned. In China, severe flooding claimed thousands of lives.

Water, food, and energy systems under pressure

Across Asia, water systems are already under strain. In countries like Thailand, projections suggest widespread water shortages affecting both domestic use and agriculture. Saltwater intrusion in urban areas threatens drinking supplies, while declining reserves raise concerns about long-term sustainability.

Energy systems are equally vulnerable. Rising temperatures increase demand for cooling, placing additional pressure on power grids. At the same time, drought conditions reduce hydropower generation—creating a double shock in supply and demand.

Older adults, children, people with chronic illnesses, and outdoor workers face significantly higher risks during extreme heat events. Low-income communities, in particular, often lack access to cooling, clean water, and timely medical care.
