JPMC emergency ward faces severe challenges, patients demand urgent reforms

KARACHI: The emergency ward of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) is grappling with serious challenges as hundreds of patients continue to face difficulties due to inadequate facilities, broken equipment, and alleged unprofessional behavior of medical staff.

According to hospital sources, patients arriving at the emergency unit are often compelled to purchase essential medicines from outside pharmacies, putting an additional financial burden on poor and deserving individuals. Despite being Karachi’s largest public hospital, a clear policy to address this critical issue has not yet been introduced by the administration.

The situation inside the emergency ward is further worsened by broken beds and a shortage of functional stretchers. Many patients are forced to undergo treatment on the floor or face delays when being shifted between wards, leading to frustration among attendants and families.

Patients and their attendants have also complained about negligent and unsupportive behavior of doctors and paramedical staff. Despite the rising number of cases, patients claim they are not receiving timely attention.

Although Dr. Irfan Siddiqui has been designated as the in-charge of the emergency ward, sources claim that the actual administrative authority lies with Dr. Nosheen, who is reportedly more focused on medical education than on emergency care.

Eyewitnesses confirm that hundreds of patients visit the JPMC emergency ward daily, but the lack of facilities and slow response by the administration continue to undermine the quality of healthcare services. Citizens argue that immediate reforms are necessary to ensure timely treatment and restore public trust in the hospital.

On the other hand, a spokesperson for Jinnah Hospital Karachi stated that medicines are being provided under local purchase arrangements and that stretchers are available in sufficient quantity. The spokesperson further clarified that Dr. Nosheen is fully focused on improving emergency care and is actively working to resolve the issues being faced by patients.
