KARACHI: In a groundbreaking medical achievement, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) has successfully performed its first-ever artificial knee implant surgery on a cancer patient, offering new hope to those battling bone cancers in Pakistan.

According to JPMC officials, the complex four-hour-long procedure was conducted completely free of charge, despite costing an estimated Rs3.5 million in private facilities.

Life-saving surgery for a 26-year-old patient

The patient, a 26-year-old diagnosed with knee and lower leg cancer, underwent the procedure led by an expert multidisciplinary team comprising Dr Farrukh, Dr Muzaffar, Dr Wali, Dr Shahid, and Dr Khushhaal, with additional support from the plastic surgery team — Dr Agha Waseem, Dr Mahak, Dr Komal, and Dr Farooq.

Post-surgery tests confirmed that the patient is now cancer-free, marking a major success for JPMC’s oncology and orthopedic surgery teams.

International-standard artificial knee implant

Dr Farrukh explained that the artificial knee implant, valued between Rs1 million to Rs1.1 million, was provided completely free of cost. The implant is internationally recognized and designed to last 20 to 25 years, enabling the patient to regain mobility and live a normal life.

“This is a historic milestone for Jinnah Hospital,” Dr Farrukh said, emphasizing the importance of making advanced cancer treatments accessible for underprivileged patients.

Significance for Pakistan’s healthcare

This surgery highlights JPMC’s growing capacity to deliver world-class cancer treatment and advanced orthopedic procedures in the public sector. It also represents a major leap forward in making life-saving surgeries available to patients who otherwise could not afford them.
