Civil Hospital Karachi set for historic Rs100 billion upgrade: 500 new beds, state-of-the-art towers

KARACHI: A historic transformation is on the horizon for Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK), Pakistan’s largest public hospital. In a groundbreaking decision, the Sindh government has approved a Rs100 billion expansion project, adding 500 new beds and modernizing the facility with two 12-storey towers for medical and surgical units. This bold initiative promises to redefine healthcare delivery for the city’s millions of residents.

The approval was granted during a meeting chaired by Syed Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister of Sindh, with authorities also endorsing the hospital’s new master plan, aimed at converting CHK into a state-of-the-art medical facility while preserving its historic legacy.

Built in 1898, before the creation of Pakistan, Civil Hospital Karachi will undergo its first major expansion in over a century. Officials emphasized that heritage structures, including the 120-year-old Queen Victoria building, will be preserved as part of the redevelopment, blending modern healthcare with historical conservation.

Modern infrastructure for comprehensive patient care

Under the approved plan, CHK will feature two dedicated 12-storey towers for its medical and surgical departments. The design focuses on a one-window system, enabling patients to access comprehensive treatment and consultation under a single roof—dramatically improving efficiency and patient experience.

The project will also incorporate private partners under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, ensuring that international-standard healthcare facilities are integrated while maintaining public accessibility.

Medical Superintendent CHK, Dr. Khalid Bukhari, highlighted the scale of the hospital’s daily operations, noting that 6,000 to 7,000 patients visit CHK each day. He added that Dr. Azra Pechuho, Provincial Health Minister, praised the expansion initiative, recognizing its potential to elevate healthcare delivery in Karachi and across Sindh.

This expansion is more than just bricks and mortar—it addresses chronic patient overload, infrastructure bottlenecks, and outdated facilities that have long challenged Pakistan’s healthcare system.
