Researchers detect new deadlier COVID-19 strain 'NeoCov'

WUHAN: While the world continues to cope with the Omicron variant of COVID-19, retellings of another variant of COVID-19, called 'NeoCov,' had started to propagate.

According to scientists in Wuhan, China, this strain had a high mortality and transmission rate.

Experts stated that NeoCov was a COVID-19 strain associated with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). Moreover, this strain kills one in every three infected individuals.

They further expressed that NeoCov was not a novel variant; it was detected in 2012 and 2015 in Middle Eastern countries and was similar to the human SARS-CoV-2.

Concerning the novel strain's potential danger, Russian State Virology and Biotechnology Research Center's professionals stated that the vector research centre is aware of the information gathered by Chinese researchers regarding the NeoCoV.

According to reports, the COVID-19 vaccinations may not be sufficient to protect the human immune system. Additionally, their review of the literature demonstrated that current COVID-19 immunizations could not protect humans from infection caused by this pathogen.
