KARACHI: In a heartfelt farewell ceremony, Professor Muhammad Saeed Quraishy, T.I, Vice Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), was honored by his colleagues and staff as he retired after completing two consecutive terms, spanning eight years. His leadership has been pivotal in transforming Dow University of Health Sciences into a leading educational institution. From launching Pakistan’s first Master Strategic Plan in a public-sector University to integrating cutting-edge innovations like AI and machine learning, Prof. Quraishy’s impact is lasting and profound. On his retirement, the university community gathered at the Moeen Auditorium to celebrate his legacy and pay tribute to the leader who played a crucial role in shaping the future of healthcare in Pakistan.

Professor Quraishy’s legacy of leadership and transformation

In his farewell address, Professor Quraishy reflected on the major milestones achieved during his tenure, emphasizing that Dow Comprehensive Cancer Center and Sindh Infectious Disease Hospital stand as unique institutions in Pakistan, offering world-class diagnostic and treatment facilities under one roof. He acknowledged that these transformative projects were made possible by the collective effort of his team. As he put it, “A true leader is one who transforms the weaknesses of his team into strengths.”

He also shared the pride he felt when, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sindh Infectious Disease Hospital was established swiftly at NIPA Chowrangi — a symbol of rapid response made possible by strong teamwork.

Throughout the ceremony, faculty members, administrators, and staff paid their heartfelt tributes to Professor Quraishy, praising his leadership style, which emphasized empowerment and teamwork. Professor Tariq Rafi, Chairman of the Sindh Higher Education Commission, noted that Professor Quraishy was a master of precise language, which reflected his effective and insightful leadership. Professor Nazli Hussain, Pro-Vice Chancellor, commended him for always working behind the scenes to empower his team, leading to remarkable accomplishments under his guidance.

Professor Jehan Ara Hassan highlighted that under Professor Quraishy’s leadership, Dow University introduced unprecedented healthcare facilities in the public sector, improving access to quality care for the people of Pakistan. Meanwhile, Professor Iftikhar Ahmed, Principal of Dow International Medical College, said that Professor Quraishy’s vision, integrity, and hard work allowed everyone to thrive, with his guidance forever shaping Dow University’s success.

Dr. Saad Khalid Niaz, former Sindh Health Minister, recalled how Professor Quraishy’s decision to return to Pakistan after his training in the UK inspired him and many others to contribute to Pakistan’s development. “Professor Quraishy’s return was a turning point, not just for Dow University but for the entire healthcare landscape in Pakistan,” Dr. Niaz remarked.

In a special moment during the ceremony, a portrait of Professor Muhammad Saeed Quraishy was unveiled, a gift from the staff and officers of Dow University as a symbol of respect and gratitude for his leadership and contributions. This portrait will serve as a lasting tribute to his remarkable legacy.

As Professor Quraishy prepares for his retirement, he reflected on the importance of teamwork and collective effort in achieving the successes of the university. "Dow University is not just mine, it belongs to everyone," he said. "Its success is the result of collective dreams turned into reality by all those who have worked together."

He closed his address by thanking the faculty, staff, and students, who, he said, were the backbone of the university’s growth and success. "Together, we’ve built something extraordinary," he added.
