Scientists found that these cells activate an inflammatory pathway known as NF-kB pathway—a mechanism strongly linked to aging and chronic disease.

To prove this, researchers recreated the same “aging signal” in young mice.

But when scientists removed the harmful GZMK-marked cells, the lungs regained their ability to cope.
“This suggests the aging lung tissue itself is driving inflammation,” said Tien Peng, senior author of the study published in Immunity.
During the pandemic, clinicians faced a puzzling pattern:

When researchers examined lung tissue from elderly patients suffering from Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, they found the same inflammatory clusters seen in the lab.

→ Healthy lungs showed none.
“We saw patients who no longer had the infection but still had devastating lung inflammation,” Peng explained.
This discovery flips a critical assumption:
