How one Karachi classroom turned into a mini medical college

KARACHI: A regular school day in Karachi took an unexpected turn when a classroom transformed into something far bigger than a lesson plan. Students who came expecting routine lectures instead found themselves stepping into the world of modern medicine — where careers begin, emergencies are handled, and health decisions shape lives. What unfolded was not just a visit, but a glimpse into the future of healthcare.

The Dow Institute of Medical Technology, part of Dow University of Health Sciences, conducted a community outreach and career awareness session at N. J. V. Higher Secondary School. The initiative was organized under the supervision of Ruquia Noor, Head of the Respiratory and Critical Care Therapy Department.

The session introduced students to the expanding field of Medical Technology and its growing role in modern healthcare. From diagnostic sciences to critical care support, students were guided through major disciplines in allied health sciences and how these professions contribute directly to saving lives in hospitals and clinics.

Beyond careers, the outreach carried a practical mission. A focused segment on First Aid and Emergency Awareness equipped students with essential response skills for everyday incidents. Guidance on hygiene and preventive health further linked classroom learning with real-world responsibility, emphasizing how early awareness can reduce disease burden in communities.

Designed to be interactive and age-appropriate, the session encouraged questions, participation, and curiosity. Teachers reported heightened interest in healthcare professions, while students gained clarity on career paths that are often overlooked compared to medicine and engineering.

The initiative reflects the Dow Institute of Medical Technology’s broader commitment to community engagement and health literacy. By reaching students early, the institute aims to bridge the gap between education and national healthcare needs, strengthening Pakistan’s future allied health workforce from the classroom upward.

Faculty members played a central role in delivering the session, including Ms. Syeda Hina Rizvi, Ms. Surraya Shams, Dr. Anosh, Ms. Salma Parveen, Ms. Tehreem, Ms. Samina Baig, and Rimsha Gellani. Special appreciation was extended to Ms. Sana for managing transportation and logistical coordination for the outreach activity.

As Pakistan faces growing pressure on its healthcare system, such school-based interventions may quietly shape tomorrow’s hospitals. What began as a classroom visit became a blueprint for how communities, education, and medicine can intersect long before students choose their professions.
