In a striking new discovery that could reshape how we understand obesity and recovery, scientists have found that the human immune system may carry a long-lasting “memory” of obesity—persisting for years even after significant weight loss.
Published in EMBO Reports, the decade-long study reveals that key immune cells remain biologically altered, potentially keeping former patients at risk of serious diseases long after they return to a healthy weight.

The research, led by Prof Claudio Mauro at the University of Birmingham, focused on helper T cells—also known as CD4+ lymphocytes—critical components of the immune system.
Scientists discovered that obesity leaves molecular “tags” on these cells through a process called DNA methylation.

Even after weight loss, these changes can remain for five to ten years, continuing to influence how the immune system behaves.
