Endocrine Disorders Increasing At Alarming Rate In Pakistan

KARACHI: Endocrine disorders are increasing alarmingly in Pakistan, and Diabetes is the most common endocrine disorder, followed by thyroids, short stature, infertility and others, stated Prof Dr Zaman Sheikh, the Executive and Founding Member of the Pakistan Endocrine Society (PES), in a press conference held at Karachi Press Club.
“According to International Diabetes Federation, Pakistan is currently 3rd in the world in terms of the number of people with Diabetes. One in four Pakistanis has diabetes”, he stated.
President Pakistan Endocrine Society  Dr Ayesha Sheikh and Vice-President Dr Ali Asghar were also present on this occasion.
Prof Zaman Sheikh said our lifestyle, including unhealthy eating and lack of exercise, is the biggest reason for increasing Diabetes in Pakistan. As a nation, we should walk at least 30 minutes every day and reduce sugary and oily food to prevent Obesity and Diabetes.  
He informed that the Pakistan Endocrine Society is trying to create awareness among the general public, about the prevention and management of Diabetes, through electronic, print and social media.  He explained that endocrinology deals with different hormones and their disorders in the human body. Diabetes is the most common endocrine disorder.
He announced that the 19th annual conference of the Pakistan Endocrine Society would be held on 25-28 November 2021 at the local hotel of Islamabad. On November 25, there will be an Endocrine board review course for endocrine fellows in training and a Weill Cornell diabetes course for General practitioners.  
The pre-conference workshops will be held on November 26, while the conference’s inauguration will be on the same date. The conference will continue till November 28 2021. The conference will be both physical as well as online. Leading national and international experts in Endocrinology will be presenting.
