KARACHI: Observed each year on June 26, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is a global initiative led by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to raise awareness about the severe impact of drug abuse and illegal trafficking. The 2025 theme, “The evidence is clear: invest in prevention,” highlights the urgency of promoting education, early intervention, and treatment strategies.
In observance of this global day, the Institute of Professional Psychology at Bahria University Karachi, in collaboration with the Sindh Mental Health Authority, organized a seminar titled “Breaking the Chains: Paths to Prevention and Recovery.”
The event aimed to educate students, faculty, and professionals about the growing challenges of substance use, behavioral addictions, and holistic paths to recovery. It created a platform for meaningful dialogue among mental health experts, clinicians, educators, and the wider student community.
The seminar began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by an opening address from Senator Karim Khawaja, Chairman of the Sindh Mental Health Authority. He emphasized the importance of institutional partnerships in preventing drug use among youth.

A notable session on counseling and psychotherapy was led by a clinical psychologist from the Institute of Professional Psychology, who focused on evidence-based approaches to addiction recovery and the importance of empathy and patient engagement in treatment.
One of the seminar's key features was the combined participation of mental health professionals and addiction treatment specialists. This collaborative approach reinforced the value of integrated care, combining medical, psychological, and community-based strategies.
Faculty and students from Bahria University’s Institute of Professional Psychology and other departments participated actively, sharing insights and asking thought-provoking questions that added to the depth of discussion.
In her closing remarks, a senior representative of Bahria University reiterated the institution’s commitment to advancing mental health education, fostering responsible attitudes among youth, and contributing to a healthier, drug-free society.
The event served as a vital step toward promoting awareness, reducing stigma, and encouraging informed decision-making around addiction and mental health.
