Avoid this common food that damages memory in just 2 days, scientists warn

Memory loss isn’t just a concern for old age — it may start much sooner than you think.
A groundbreaking new study published in the journal NEURON has revealed that a high-fat diet can harm memory within just two days — at least in mice — by disrupting brain function in the hippocampus, the region responsible for forming new memories.

Researchers found that when mice consumed a high-fat diet (58% fat), memory performance declined almost immediately — even before any weight gain or signs of diabetes appeared.

How a high-fat diet impacts the brain

Scientists discovered that the diet triggered overactivity in specific brain cells called CCK-interneurons within the hippocampus, disrupting normal memory formation. Normally, these neurons depend on glucose for proper function — but high-fat diets interfere with glucose availability, leading to memory problems.

Even more surprisingly, the researchers found that reintroducing glucose or blocking a key enzyme (PKM2) restored memory performance, suggesting the damage could be reversible.

Why this matters for you

Metabolic syndrome — which includes high blood sugar, excess abdominal fat, high blood pressure, and high triglycerides — is already linked to cognitive decline and dementia. This new research shows that brain effects may start far earlier than expected, highlighting the importance of healthy eating habits.

Experts say these findings reinforce the importance of modifiable risk factors like diet in protecting brain health. Making small changes today could safeguard your memory tomorrow.
