PEMDA calls for equipment’s local production to boost economic growth

LAHORE: The Pakistan Electro Medical Equipment Manufacturers and Distributors Association (PEMDA) advocates for the production of electro-medical equipment within the country to strengthen economic growth.

The announcement was made by Babar Kayani, Chairman PEMDA, during a media talk at a reception hosted for the key stakeholders in the electro-medical sector in Lahore.

Kayani, in his address to the media, underscored the global surge in healthcare technology, emphasizing the crucial role played by electro-medical equipment in both national and international markets.

Expressing concern over the sector's lack of recognition as an industry in Pakistan, he pledged to advocate for policy changes and work towards resolving issues faced by the electro-medical sector. He assured support for local production efforts by the private sector.

PEMDA Senior Vice Chairman Tahir Rashid said that Pakistan has become a major hub for imports in this industry. Referring to international projections, he mentioned that the USA is expected to export equipment worth US$ 500 million to Pakistan in the coming year, while various European countries have shown interest in importing a variety of electro-medical equipment.

Mr Rashid expressed optimism that PEMDA, in collaboration with the government, will reduce reliance on imports by initiating local production, starting with small and medium-level equipment.

Vice chairmen Shaukat Ali and M Naeem Ahmad urged stakeholders to unite for the development of the electro-medical sector as a recognized industry.

The PEMDA executive committee members outlined a comprehensive strategy to address the sector's challenges with the support of relevant government bodies.

PEMDA plans to transform Pakistan's electro-medical sector into a self-sufficient industry, boosting economic growth and reducing dependence on imports.
