‘1 in 8 Pakistani women have breast cancer’

KARACHI: The Directorate of Health Karachi recently organized a breast cancer awareness program in collaboration with the Kash Welfare Trust at the Director Health’s Office in Karachi. The event was attended by District health officers (DHOs) and focal persons from six districts of the Karachi division attended the awareness session.

Experts briefed the participants about the early detection of breast cancer cases and the management of such patients. They said that if the cancer was detected at an early stage, the chances of survival would be up to 90%.

Experts said that 1 in 8 Pakistani women have breast cancer. Additionally, Pakistan has the highest rate of breast cancer in Asia. Many women in rural areas were increasingly developing breast cancers every year because it was an inherited disease, which was transmitted from mother to daughter, experts told.

They also stressed the need for establishing screening centers all over the country to diagnose various types of cancer. Every year many women fell victim to breast cancer.

Later in the second phase, the DHOs, as well as the focal persons from the six districts of Karachi, would hold breast cancer sessions in their respective districts to educate doctors about its early detection and timely management.
