Punjab Healthcare Commission mandates CCTV cameras in private hospitals for monitoring and patient safety

LAHORE: The Punjab Healthcare Commission (PHC) has directed private hospitals across the province to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at critical locations within their facilities to enhance monitoring and strengthen patient safety.

According to an official notification, all private hospitals must ensure the installation of functional CCTV cameras in emergency departments, intensive care units (ICUs), neonatal nurseries, waiting areas, main entrances, and internal corridors. The move is aimed at improving surveillance and ensuring the timely resolution of patient complaints.

The PHC emphasized that while monitoring is essential, hospitals must carefully balance surveillance with respect for patient privacy and dignity. Cameras are strictly prohibited in washrooms, examination rooms, or any location where patient confidentiality could be compromised.

In addition, hospitals are required to maintain CCTV footage for a minimum of 40 days from the date of recording, enabling authorities to investigate complaints and incidents effectively.

This directive reflects PHC’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare governance, strengthen hospital accountability, and provide safer environments for patients and staff across Punjab.
