WHO, Pakistan to establish 26 new vaccination centers nationwide

ISLAMABAD: In a major step to strengthen immunization coverage and healthcare accessibility in Pakistan, the World Health Organization (WHO), in collaboration with the Government of Pakistan, has announced the establishment of 26 new vaccination centers across the country. The initiative, supported by GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, is expected to serve over 750,000 people in hard-to-reach and underserved communities.

Thirteen of the new vaccination centers in Pakistan are already operational, located in Punjab, Pakistan-administered Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. The remaining 13 centers are currently in the procurement phase and are planned for Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

These centers are part of a targeted strategy to improve Pakistan’s Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), addressing low immunization rates in remote areas. The facilities have been strategically placed in regions where basic health services are limited, aiming to ensure equitable access to life-saving vaccines.

“This initiative reinforces primary health care and emergency response systems, ensuring no one is left behind,” said Dr Dapeng Luo, WHO Representative in Pakistan.

Solar-powered, climate-resilient health infrastructure

To ensure uninterrupted vaccine delivery, especially during power outages and natural disasters, all centers are designed to be solar-powered. This approach not only boosts the centers’ reliability but also supports climate resilience and sustainable healthcare delivery in line with global health and environmental goals.

The project reflects WHO’s continued commitment to strengthening primary health care systems, especially in countries with fragile health infrastructure. By increasing routine immunization coverage, this partnership is expected to contribute to reduced child mortality, stronger outbreak preparedness, and health equity in Pakistan.
