KARACHI: JSMU's Institute of Family Medicine (IFM-JSMU) and Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at introducing a Family Medicine Residency Training Program for FCPS residents.

It was signed by Prof Shahid Rasul, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of JSMU and the Executive Director of JPMC, Prof Masroor Ahmed, and Professor Marie Andrades from the Institute for Family Medicine at JSMU.

With regard to FCPS trainees' clinical rotations at JPMC, IFM-JSMU will collaborate with the Dean Postgraduate of JPMC. A stipend will also be paid to the residents by JSMU while they are in the programme.

Resident physicians in the IFM-JSMU Family Medicine Residency Training Program appreciate the assistance and clinical rotations provided by JPMC, according to Prof Shahid Rasul. In Pakistan, this is the first-ever public sector programme of this kind.

Agreements like this one allow JPMC to assist the FCPS trainees of Family Medicine by providing specialised rotations in other departments, as mandated by the Pakistan College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPSP).

For the establishment of postgraduate fellowship training in Family Medicine in order to generate national leaders in primary care, Chairperson Institute of Family Medicine-JSMU Prof Marie Andrades was grateful to JPMC.

Prof Shahid Rasul and Prof Marie Andrades, Chairperson of IFM-JSMU, were lauded by Prof Masroor Ahmed, Dean of Medicine.

Further, he said, it can address the scarcity of primary care physicians and deliver community-based healthcare services in the country.
