ISLAMABAD: Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship in Cardiac Surgery by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) in recognition of his distinguished contributions to public health, medical education, healthcare research, and his dedicated service to society.

The honorary fellowship was conferred during a special ceremony held in Islamabad as part of President Pezeshkian’s official visit to Pakistan. Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif presented the prestigious fellowship, while Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir also attended the ceremony, underscoring the importance of the occasion and the close ties between Pakistan and Iran.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the award acknowledges President Pezeshkian’s longstanding commitment to advancing healthcare services, promoting medical education, supporting scientific research, and serving humanity with dedication and perseverance.

Recognition of a physician-president

President Pezeshkian, who is a cardiac surgeon by profession, has long been associated with healthcare and medical education in Iran. The honorary fellowship by CPSP recognizes his role in strengthening public health and encouraging scientific and medical advancement.

Officials said the distinction reflects appreciation for his services in public health, medical education, and medical research, as well as his broader contributions to society.

Boost to Pakistan-Iran medical cooperation

The conferment of the honorary fellowship is expected to further strengthen bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Iran in medicine and healthcare.

According to official statements, the move is expected to promote closer collaboration between medical institutions and colleges in both countries, particularly in the areas of medical education, academic exchanges, healthcare research, and the exchange of faculty members and examiners.

Experts say institutional partnerships and professional exchanges between neighboring countries can help strengthen healthcare systems, improve training standards, and foster research collaborations that benefit patients and medical professionals alike.

Expanding academic and healthcare ties

Pakistan and Iran have maintained cooperation in several sectors, including health, education, and scientific research. The latest recognition is being viewed as another step toward deepening academic engagement and encouraging greater interaction between medical institutions of the two countries.

Officials believe such initiatives can create opportunities for joint research, knowledge-sharing, and enhanced training for physicians and surgeons, while contributing to the development of healthcare services across the region.

The ceremony highlighted not only the personal achievements of President Pezeshkian but also the growing importance of medical diplomacy and academic collaboration in strengthening Pakistan-Iran relations.
