Senator Saleem Mandviwalla strengthens Karachi’s public hospitals with ICU beds, surgical equipment donations

KARACHI: In a continued effort to strengthen public healthcare services in Karachi, Pakistan Peoples Party parliamentarian, Chief Whip of Senate of Pakistan, and Chairman Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue, Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, has facilitated the donation of critical medical equipment and supplies to two of the city’s largest public sector hospitals—Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK)—in collaboration with the Poverty Eradication Initiative (PEI).

The initiative is aimed at improving healthcare infrastructure, expanding critical care capacity, and enhancing the quality of services provided to thousands of patients who rely on government-run hospitals for treatment.

Today, Senator Mandviwalla handed over essential healthcare support equipment, including patient beds and ICU beds equipped with transformers, to the management of Jinnah Hospital Karachi. Senior officials from JPMC and representatives of PEI attended the handover ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Senator Mandviwalla reaffirmed his commitment to supporting public hospitals and strengthening healthcare services for citizens, emphasizing the importance of investing in institutions that serve large segments of the population.

The donation is expected to help reinforce critical care services at JPMC, one of Pakistan’s largest tertiary care hospitals, which caters to patients from Karachi and other parts of Sindh and the country.

Last week, Senator Mandviwalla also participated in a separate ceremony at Civil Hospital Karachi, where surgical instruments and medical supplies were distributed to the hospital administration with the support of PEI.

The event was attended by representatives of the Poverty Eradication Initiative and senior administrative officials of Civil Hospital Karachi.

Speaking at the ceremony, Medical Superintendent Dr. Khalid Bukhari highlighted the continued support being extended to Civil Hospital by the Government of Sindh and the provincial health department.

He expressed gratitude to Senator Mandviwalla and the PEI administration for their contribution, saying the equipment and supplies would help improve healthcare delivery and strengthen patient care services at the institution.

Dr. Bukhari also called upon senators, members of the National Assembly, members of provincial assemblies, and philanthropists to continue supporting public hospitals, noting that Civil Hospital Karachi provides free treatment facilities to patients arriving from across Pakistan.

The twin initiatives underscore the growing role of public-private and philanthropic partnerships in addressing the infrastructure and resource challenges faced by Pakistan’s healthcare system. Healthcare experts have long emphasized that strengthening public hospitals through investments in medical equipment and critical care facilities is essential for improving access to quality healthcare, particularly for low-income and underserved communities.

JPMC and Civil Hospital Karachi are among the busiest healthcare institutions in Sindh, collectively treating millions of patients annually. Upgrading their infrastructure and ensuring the availability of modern medical equipment are considered key to improving patient outcomes and reducing pressure on the healthcare system.

Officials say such collaborations can play an important role in bridging resource gaps and supporting the long-term development of public healthcare institutions in Pakistan.
