Indian made killer syrup kills 99 children, banned

JAKARTA: Following the deaths of almost 100 children and an unexplained rise in cases of acute renal injury, Indonesia has suspended the sale of all syrups and liquid medications. The prohibition comes after the World Health Organisation (WHO) connected four cough syrups manufactured in India to the deaths of up to 70 Gambia children with acute renal failure.

The ban, which the country's Ministry of Health announced, will remain in place until the conclusion of an inquiry into unlicensed medical syrups suspected of containing harmful components.

Mohammad Syahril, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, stated that 99 deaths and 206 cases of acute renal injury in children, most of whom were under six, were being investigated.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has concerns that "excessive levels" of chemicals were present in four syrups made by Maiden Pharmaceuticals Limited:

Promethazine oral solution
Kofexmalin infant cough syrup
Makoff baby cough syrup
Magrip N cold syrup
