AKUH earns third consecutive Platinum Award for heart attack care

KARACHI: The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) has received its third consecutive Platinum Performance Achievement Award from the American College of Cardiology (ACC), recognising its sustained performance in providing evidence-based care to patients experiencing heart attacks.

The award is specifically linked to the ACC's Chest Pain – MI Registry, a clinical quality-improvement programme focused on improving the standard of care for patients with heart attacks. The ACC describes its Performance Achievement Award as recognising hospitals that successfully implement a higher standard of care for heart attack patients.

Third consecutive Platinum recognition

AKUH's latest recognition follows two previous Platinum awards through the ACC's Chest Pain – MI Registry.

The hospital received the 2024 Chest Pain – MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award, followed by the 2025 Platinum Performance Achievement Award. The ACC's 2025 award listing includes Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, among hospitals receiving the Platinum distinction.

The latest announcement means AKUH has now achieved Platinum recognition for three consecutive award cycles in the programme.

That continuity is important because the award is tied to clinical performance and adherence to established standards rather than simply recognising the availability of cardiac services.

What the ACC award actually measures

The Chest Pain – MI Registry is part of the ACC's National Cardiovascular Data Registry (NCDR) and provides participating hospitals with a framework for measuring the quality of care delivered to patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), commonly known as a heart attack.

The ACC says the Performance Achievement Award recognises a hospital's success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients. The programme uses clinical performance data to support quality improvement and help participating hospitals benchmark their care against established standards.

For AKUH, the Platinum recognition therefore reflects its performance in a specific area of emergency cardiovascular medicine: the treatment and management of patients experiencing heart attacks.

A heart attack occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle becomes blocked, depriving the affected tissue of oxygen.
