Dozens struck by ‘red eye’ as conjunctivitis outbreak spreads across Karachi

KARACHI: Dozens of people are being struck daily by a fast-spreading conjunctivitis outbreak, commonly called “red eye” or “pink eye,” as hospitals across Karachi report a surge in cases. Patients are presenting with symptoms such as eye redness, pain, swelling, light sensitivity, and watery discharge.

Health experts link the outbreak to humid post-rain conditions, poor hygiene, and the spread of adenovirus. According to ophthalmologists, mild cases usually resolve in about a week with cold water compresses, while moderate to severe cases may last 15 to 20 days. In more serious cases, blurred vision and light sensitivity can linger for up to two months, requiring urgent medical care.

Prof Israr Ahmed Bhutto, Head of Ophthalmology at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), said the rise in cases has been sudden:

“Before the rains, we were hardly seeing any patients. Now we are getting 15 to 20 daily,” he noted. Prof Bhutto stressed that conjunctivitis spreads rapidly in crowded areas and through poor sanitary practices. “Usually, one eye gets infected first, and without proper care, the second eye also catches infection,” he explained.

What doctors recommend

Prof Bhutto and medical experts are urging patients to avoid self-medication and adopt strict hygiene measures:

• Use safe treatment: Mild cases can be managed with cold compresses and artificial tear drops, which are safe and free from side effects.
• Avoid steroid eye drops: Prof Bhutto warned against steroid drops such as Betnesol, which may give temporary relief but can damage the eye long term.
• Practice good hygiene: Wash hands frequently, use separate towels and pillows, and wear sunglasses to reduce discomfort and transmission.
• Skip home remedies: Rosewater use is discouraged due to contamination risks.

Dr Khalida, an ophthalmologist at Civil Hospital Karachi, confirmed 10–12 cases are reported daily from areas including Quaidabad, Keamari, Baldia Town, and Liaquatabad. Private clinics across the city have also seen a steep rise in red eye infections.

Doctors urge people to seek medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen, as untreated conjunctivitis can lead to complications affecting vision.
