Woman sent to jail for filing false rape accusations

PIETERMARITZBURG: A 28-year-old lady was arrested in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, for allegedly lying about being raped by two males.

Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, a police spokesperson, said the woman claimed she was asleep in a B Section house in Osizweni on the evening of February 11 when she heard someone unlock the door.

The two 34-year-old and 36-year-old brothers were taken into custody. After a thorough inquiry, the investigating officer found that the complainant lied under oath. Afterward, both citizens were freed by the department.

Gwala claimed the Osizweni SAPS initiated a perjury probe and charged the woman. Further, the Madadeni Magistrates Court ordered her in detention until her next court date. "We once again appeal to our citizens to refrain from reporting bogus cases, as important police resources are wasted chasing untrue charges and preventing actual victims of crimes of recognising justice," Gwala stated.
