Over 20 people were injured in violence in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM: Two days after massive riots at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem, more than 20 Israelis and Palestinians were injured in a number of incidents in and around the flashpoint.

More than 170 people have been injured, making this a very sensitive time for both Israelis and Palestinians.

Police said that "hundreds" of Palestinian activists inside the mosque enclosure began assembling stone mounds early Sunday morning, just as Jewish tourists arrived.

Only Muslims and Christians are permitted to pray on the third-most sacred site in Islam, known as al-Haram al-Sharif in Arabic.

The police entered the facility to "remove" the protesters and "re-establish order," according to the authorities.

At least five Palestinians were hospitalized, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent. It was reported that rubber-coated steel bullets had been used to injure individuals.
