Dr Zulfiqar Bhutta receives Virchow Prize 2025 for leadership in global maternal and child health

KARACHI: Dr Zulfiqar A. Bhutta, founding director of the Institute for Global Health and Development at the Aga Khan University (AKU), has been awarded the highly prestigious Virchow Prize 2025. This global honor recognizes his decades-long leadership in advancing maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) equity through community-based, evidence-driven research and policy innovation.

Dr Bhutta shares the Virchow Prize 2025 with Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim of South Africa. The award, presented by the Virchow Foundation, is among the world’s most respected accolades in global health, honoring contributions that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the vision of “Health for All.”

Recognizing lifelong commitment to health equity

The Virchow Prize Committee praised Dr Bhutta’s exceptional contributions, citing his relentless commitment to addressing structural inequalities in healthcare. For over four decades, his pioneering research and policy influence have helped reshape the global health architecture, particularly by focusing on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and populations historically excluded from mainstream health systems.

In their official citation, the committee noted, “Dr Bhutta’s work has been instrumental in shaping global health guidelines and influencing national policies for maternal, child health, and nutrition in low- and middle-income countries. He has championed community-based primary care models, large-scale randomized trials, and implementation research within vulnerable communities and fragile settings.”

With over 1,400 scientific publications and advisory roles in top-tier organizations such as WHO, UNICEF, and PMNCH, Dr Bhutta is globally recognized as a thought leader whose research leads directly to life-saving policies. His work has played a pivotal role in reducing maternal and child mortality across South-Central Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and in humanitarian crises worldwide.
