KARACHI: As many as 500 successful graduates were bestowed degrees at the fifth convocation of the Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) recently held at a hotel in Karachi. 

The ceremony included the presentation of 27 medals to top-performing graduates of the 2022-2023 batch, with female students excelling and securing 25 of these accolades.

Urooj Fatima, an exceptional MBBS student, got special recognition by receiving three medals for her outstanding achievements.

Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori, who was the chief guest and chancellor, congratulated the graduating students, recognizing the roles played by parents and teachers in their academic accomplishments. He commended JSMU for being a reputable medical university offering accessible and affordable education.

The governor emphasised the critical role of nursing in the healthcare system, acknowledging the first batch of nursing graduates as a testament to JSMU's commitment to meeting evolving healthcare sector demands. He urged the graduates to dedicate themselves to the nation, addressing doctor shortages and contributing to the country's healthcare needs.

Health Secretary Mansoor Abbas Rizvi distributed degrees to the graduates during the ceremony.JSMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Amjad Saraj Memon congratulated parents for their steadfast support and sacrifices. He highlighted the university's growth and collaborations in 2023, including the introduction of new programmes, signing MoUs with national and international organisations, and the opening of new campuses.

Prof Memon also mentioned the ongoing projects at JSMU, such as the establishment of SESSI's affiliated hospital for the School of Nursing and Midwifery, the inauguration of Pakistan's first Preventive Cardiology Clinic, and flood relief initiatives in areas like Dadu, Matiari, Hub, and beyond. JSMU's is also providing free dental treatments and laboratory services at Karachi Press Club.

The convocation committee's chairperson, Prof Huma Ali, addressed the event, and Registrar Dr Azam Khan administered the oath-taking ceremony.

The programme also featured documentaries and slide shows showing the remarkable journeys of the graduating students.

Distinguished graduates from various disciplines were awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals in MBBS, BDS, and Pharm D. Certificates were also distributed to students ranking 4th to 10th in MBBS, BDS, BSN, and Pharm D.

Master's degrees, including MBA, MSPH, and MPH, were conferred upon graduates, adding another layer of achievement to the convocation ceremony.
