Peshawar Institute of Cardiology performs record-breaking 14 TAVI surgeries in one day

PESHAWAR: In a historic achievement for Pakistan’s healthcare sector, surgeons at the Peshawar Institute of Cardiology (PIC) have set a world record by performing 14 Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) surgeries in a single day — replacing heart valves without opening the chest.

According to hospital spokesperson Riffat Anjum, the remarkable feat was accomplished on August 14, when PIC’s expert cardiac team successfully performed the minimally invasive procedure on 14 patients who were not candidates for open-heart surgery. The hospital has officially submitted the achievement to Guinness World Records for recognition.

Dr. Ali Raza, Medical Director of PIC, revealed that cardiologists and surgeons from leading hospitals across Pakistan participated in this milestone event. The patients, aged between 70 and 80 years, received a new lease on life through TAVI — a procedure that offers faster recovery, reduced risks, and improved quality of life.

Dean of PIC, Prof. Dr. Syed Shahkar Ahmed Shah, praised the team’s dedication, stating:

“This is a landmark step for Pakistan’s medical field, showcasing that we have world-class facilities, expertise, and the ability to deliver cutting-edge cardiac care.”

The record-breaking surgeries highlight Pakistan’s growing capabilities in advanced cardiac treatment and reinforce PIC’s role as a national leader in heart care innovation.
