KARACHI: Pakistan’s 78th Independence Day and the commemoration of the “Marka-e-Haq” victory were celebrated with patriotic fervor, unity, and renewed commitment to national progress at major institutions including the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute of Trauma (SMBBIT), College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), Ziauddin University, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), and Sindh Government Children’s Hospital.

SMBBIT: Tribute to unity and service

At SMBBIT, celebrations began with a flag-hoisting ceremony led by Special Assistant to the Sindh Chief Minister Usman Hangoro and Executive Director Dr Muhammad Sabir Memon, followed by special prayers for peace, progress, and prosperity.

A media briefing highlighted SMBBIT’s achievements, advanced medical facilities, ongoing projects, and mission to provide free, high-quality trauma care. The “Employee of the Month” awards recognized outstanding staff performance. The event concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony, symbolizing unity and dedication to public service.

Mr. Hangoro commended SMBBIT’s vital role in saving lives, while Dr. Memon reminded participants that Independence Day is a call to elevate the institute’s service to the nation.

CPSP: Honoring sacrifices and armed forces

CPSP hosted a grand ceremony at its Karachi headquarters, attended by councillors, senior fellows, and staff, with Prof Hussain Mehdi as chief guest. Proceedings included Quran recitation, national flag hoisting, and the national anthem.

Secretary Prof Irshad Waheed spoke on the significance of independence and the recent military victory in Marka-e-Haq. Prof Abdulah El Muttaqi and Prof Khalid Ahmed Ashrafi paid tribute to martyrs and recalled the long struggle from 1857 to 1947 that led to Pakistan’s creation.

Prof Muhammad Masroor emphasized the responsibility of every generation to contribute positively to national progress, while Prof Hussain Mehdi underlined Pakistan’s Islamic foundation and protection of minority rights.

President CPSP Prof Khalid Masood Gondal, addressing from Lahore, congratulated the nation on both Independence Day and Operation “Bunyad-e-Marsos,” praising the Armed Forces for downing six Indian aircraft and exposing India’s aggression. He highlighted CPSP’s transformation into an interest-free organization, expansion of regional centers, and role in advancing postgraduate medical education. Prayers were offered for Kashmiris, Palestinians, and oppressed Muslims worldwide.

Ziauddin University: Celebrations across campuses

Ziauddin University marked the occasion across all campuses with active participation from faculty, students, and staff. The central flag-hoisting ceremony, led by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Abbas Zafar, featured the national anthem, patriotic songs, and an elocution contest.

The festivities included tree plantation drives, sports events, and a poster exhibition showcasing the Pakistan Independence Movement and rare photographs of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Special tributes were paid to the martyrs of Marka-e-Haq, with participants pledging renewed devotion to the homeland.

DUHS: Patriotic Beats 3.0 showcases student talent

At DUHS, the Literary and Debating Society organized “Patriotic Beats 3.0” at Muin Hall, Dow Medical College. The inter-departmental competitions in national songs and skits showcased students’ creativity and love for the country.

Principal Prof Dr Saba Sohail, chief guest, praised students’ talent as a valuable national asset. Awards were presented for best performances, including Maimoona Faisal (1st in national songs), Taha Shakil (2nd), and Haris Siddiqui (runner-up). The best skit, “Baaje se Missile tak” by Muhammad Mubeen Raza, earned high praise for creativity and delivery.

Performances drew repeated standing ovations, with the hall resounding to chants of “Pakistan Zindabad.” Prof Dr Sohail noted that Patriotic Beats has become an annual tradition, fostering national harmony and encouraging youth to contribute positively to the nation.

Sindh Govt Children’s Hospital: Inspiring patriotism through healthcare

The Sindh Government Children’s Hospital marked Pakistan’s 78th Independence Day with a vibrant celebration, emphasizing unity, resilience, and hope. The event gathered doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, patients’ attendants, and community members.

The ceremony, graced by Director of Operations Dr Arif Niaz and Medical Superintendent Dr Jameel Mughal as chief guests, began with a flag-hoisting in the hospital courtyard, followed by the national anthem and special prayers for Pakistan’s peace, stability, and prosperity.

Festivities included patriotic songs performed by staff and attendees, creating an atmosphere of pride and togetherness. The cultural program also engaged younger participants, including patients, fostering a sense of national identity.

In his address, Dr Niaz commended staff dedication, stating that Independence Day is a reminder of sacrifices made for freedom and a call to serve humanity with compassion. Dr Mughal reaffirmed the hospital’s mission to deliver specialized pediatric care to all children, regardless of background or financial status.

The celebration concluded with refreshments, symbolizing sharing and unity, while reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to improving child healthcare in Sindh.
