Sindh to operationalize Sukkur trauma center by October 2025 as part of integrated trauma system

KARACHI: The Government of Sindh is set to make a major leap in emergency healthcare by launching the Sukkur Trauma Center under the Integrated Trauma System by October 2025. This initiative forms a core part of a province-wide effort to provide timely, coordinated, and advanced trauma care across Sindh.

First phase focuses on older divisions

According to Dr Muhammad Sabir Memon, Executive Director of the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute of Trauma (SMBBIT) Karachi, the first phase of the integrated system involves trauma centers in key administrative divisions, including Karachi, Sukkur, Larkana, and Hyderabad.

He confirmed that trauma centers in Karachi and Larkana are already functional, and Sukkur Trauma Center will be operational by October 2025. Each facility is equipped with modern emergency departments, operation theatres, and intensive care units (ICUs) to address serious injuries from accidents, violence, and disasters.

Digitally linked network for rapid coordination

Dr Memon explained that the trauma centers will be digitally integrated with major teaching hospitals across the province. This linkage will:

• Enable faster patient referrals and medical coordination
• Enhance access to specialist care
• Improve response to mass casualty incidents and natural disasters
• Phase two to expand coverage across Sindh

The second phase of the trauma network will include newer divisions such as Shaheed Benazirabad and others, aiming to offer equitable access to critical trauma care throughout Sindh.

Strategic trauma hubs planned at high-risk zones

Two major trauma hubs are also planned at Razakabad (Karachi) and Jamshoro, both strategically located near national highways and high-traffic industrial corridors. These centers will be vital in responding to road accidents and occupational injuries in densely populated zones.

Public-private and institutional collaboration

The Integrated Trauma System is being developed through collaboration between the Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department, teaching hospitals, and emergency medicine experts.

Key benefits of the trauma system include:

• Reduced mortality from trauma and emergencies
• Shorter response times
• Disaster preparedness and coordinated response
• Training of medical staff in trauma protocols
• Data collection for injury surveillance and prevention

Once complete, the integrated trauma network will not only modernize emergency care in Sindh but also serve as a model for other provinces seeking to strengthen their trauma and disaster response infrastructure.
