NADRA introduces digital system for birth and death registration in hospitals nationwide

ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has launched a new digital system for birth and death registration at hospitals and health centers across Pakistan, aiming to make the process more efficient, transparent, and accessible for citizens.

Developed in collaboration with provincial governments, the initiative modernizes the country’s civil registration network, ensuring real-time data entry and verification through secure digital channels. The system has been rolled out under the directives of the Federal Minister for Interior as part of the National Biometric and Registration Policy Framework, which was approved by the Prime Minister of Pakistan on January 1, 2025.

Faster, transparent registration process

The new automated system simplifies how births and deaths are recorded at hospitals and health centers, eliminating delays caused by manual paperwork and providing digital verification through NADRA’s centralized database.

NADRA officials confirmed that the project is currently in its pilot phase, with implementation in over 50 hospitals and healthcare facilities nationwide, including:

• Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), CDA Hospital, and Federal Government Polyclinic Hospital in Islamabad
• Lady Aitchison Hospital, Sheikh Zayed Hospital, and Aria Hospital in Lahore
• Bolan Medical College in Quetta
• DHQ Hospitals in Haripur (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Mirpur (AJK), and Matiari (Sindh)
• Saif-ur-Rehman Hospital in Gilgit
• Hospitals and basic health units across Hyderabad and other districts

During the pilot stage, NADRA has successfully recorded over 4,000 birth notifications and 407 death entries through the digital system, ensuring accuracy and traceability across all administrative levels.

Nationwide implementation in progress

NADRA is actively working with provincial governments to expand the system to all public and private hospitals across Pakistan. Once fully implemented, citizens will be able to register births and deaths directly from healthcare centers, without the need to visit government offices.

According to NADRA, the initiative aligns with Pakistan’s national digital transformation agenda, supporting accurate population data collection, improved public health planning, and streamlined service delivery.

The authority emphasized that the digital registration system is a key milestone toward building a secure, inclusive, and data-driven national identity ecosystem, enhancing governance and transparency.
