Sindh inaugurates 29th chest pain unit at Gulshan-e-Hadeed for free cardiac emergency care

KARACHI: In a major step to decentralize life-saving heart care, the Sindh Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (SICVD) inaugurated its 29th Chest Pain Unit (CPU) at Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Bin Qasim Town, offering free-of-cost 24/7 cardiac emergency services to the people of Karachi.

The CPU was officially inaugurated by Barrister Murtaza Wahab, Mayor of Karachi, Professor Jawaid Akbar Sial, Executive Director of SICVD, and Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad. Senior SICVD officials also attended the ceremony.

"This Chest Pain Unit is a gift from the Sindh Government to the people of Karachi," said Mayor Wahab. "It symbolizes our resolve to strengthen the healthcare system and ensure emergency services reach every corner of the city."

Life-saving care closer to home

With this latest addition, the SICVD continues to build a robust, province-wide network of emergency cardiac care. These Chest Pain Units are designed to rapidly respond to heart attack symptoms, diagnose cases on-site, and initiate immediate treatment.

Prof. Jawaid Akbar Sial emphasized the impact, saying:

"We’ve treated over 1.7 million patients, including thousands of heart attack victims, through this CPU network. Once stabilized, patients are transferred to SICVD’s main centers for further procedures like primary angioplasty — all at zero cost, thanks to the Sindh Government’s support."

The new facility is fully equipped with:

• Advanced cardiac diagnostic tools
• Trained emergency staff
• 24/7 operation for heart attack response
• Rapid patient transfer to full-service SICVD hospitals
• A model for public health success

SICVD’s decentralized care model has drawn international attention. It bridges accessibility gaps in cardiac care, particularly for underserved communities. With each new CPU, the institute brings world-class, affordable cardiac emergency services directly to high-need areas.

The Gulshan-e-Hadeed CPU is expected to serve thousands annually, reducing fatal delays and easing pressure on tertiary hospitals.

The initiative is funded by the Government of Sindh and aligns with WHO recommendations for timely cardiovascular interventions, making it a benchmark for public health systems across the region.
