Doctor killed during Rs2.5m robbery outside Karachi bank, JPMC mourns young medic

KARACHI: A young doctor was killed during an exchange of gunfire after armed robbers intercepted a vehicle carrying millions of rupees outside a private bank in Karachi's Clifton area, police said, in an incident that also prompted an emotional tribute from Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where he served as a house officer.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) South Mahzoor Ali identified the deceased as Dr. Akash, 28, who had accompanied his father and another associate after they withdrew Rs5 million from a private bank near Teen Talwar roundabout.

According to police, the group was travelling to another bank in the Boat Basin area to deposit the cash when armed assailants intercepted their vehicle outside the bank.

A security guard opened fire at the robbers, who returned fire during the exchange. Dr. Akash was struck by a bullet and died at the scene, police said.

The suspects fled with one of the two cash bags containing Rs2.5 million, while the second bag remained with the victims.

Police have taken the security guard into custody as part of the investigation and said all aspects of the incident are being examined. Investigators are also working to identify and arrest the armed suspects who escaped after the robbery.

JPMC pays tribute to young doctor

Following the fatal shooting, the administration of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) expressed profound grief over the loss of Dr. Akash, describing him as a dedicated, hardworking and highly committed house officer who was respected by colleagues and senior faculty.

In a statement, a JPMC spokesperson said Dr. Akash had recently been selected as a Medical Officer through the latest commission examination and was awaiting his posting at the hospital, making his death an even greater loss for Pakistan's medical community.

The hospital extended condolences to his family and prayed for the departed doctor's eternal peace.

Investigation underway

Police said investigators are reviewing evidence and pursuing multiple leads to trace the robbers responsible for the fatal shooting.

The incident has renewed concerns over violent street crime in Karachi, particularly robberies targeting people carrying large amounts of cash after bank transactions. Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution while transporting substantial sums and said efforts are continuing to bring those responsible to justice.
