Poliovirus detected in sewage of Landhi

KARACHI: In an environmental sample obtained from the Landhi neighbourhood of Karachi, the Wild Poliovirus Type-1 (WPV1) was identified.

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad, an environmental sample from the Landhi neighbourhood of Karachi tested positive for Wild Poliovirus Type-1 (WPV1). This was the first positive environment sample collected in Sindh this year.

Health officials said eleven positive environmental samples were identified in the country in August 2022 alone, with five coming from Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and one from Sindh. In 2022, there were a total of 22 positive environmental samples.

Officials from the federal government reported that the positive environmental sample was taken on August 23 from the Bakhtawar Village in Karachi's Landhi neighbourhood.
