Angry Protesters set the President's House on fire

SRI LANKA: Furious protestors in Sri Lanka burned President's House in Sri Lanka.

People in Sri Lanka are still in shock as a result of the outbreak of violence. The majority of elected officials are either hiding out in safe houses or avoiding the media.

Even for government officials, it's "not safe at all," as ex-media minister Nalaka Godahewa said. One of the houses that were set ablaze belonged to him.

After defeating the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa was lauded as a war hero by most of the Sinhalese population.

As a result, anti-government protestors have been accused of being the targets of their followers' violence.

While the Rajapaksas have always stood united, their differences have now been exposed. It appears that the conflict began when Gotabaya requested Mahinda to "take one for the team" and quit his position as head.

The future of Sri Lanka's ruling family is now in question, and it's not certain how they'll get back on their feet.

There have been intensifying protests in Sri Lanka over rising costs and power cuts since the beginning of the month.

In Colombo and later at Galle Face Green, government loyalists and demonstrators fought brutally on Monday. First, outside Mahinda Rajapaksa's Temple Trees mansion.

Tear gas and water cannons were used against government supporters who had broken through police lines and attacked protestors with sticks and poles.

Demonstrators retaliated, beating government supporters and targeting governing party MPs, including a man who shot two people when a mob surrounded his car and then killed himself, authorities say.

The Rajapaksas' home was set ablaze, as were the homes of several ministries and MPs as the night wore on.

This included the Rajapaksas' ancestral home in Hambantota, southern Sri Lanka, which had been converted into a contentious museum.

According to accounts, arsonists also set fire to the area around the President House, the president's formal residence. In the aftermath of an attack on his home, a local politician died in the hospital.
