According to a new study published in BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care, the ideal amount of sleep for optimal insulin sensitivity is 7 hours and 19 minutes per night. This sweet spot, researchers suggest, could help the body respond better to insulin, potentially lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Why sleep matters for your metabolism

The study analyzed data from 23,475 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, examining sleep patterns, blood sugar control, waist circumference, and blood pressure. Researchers identified an inverted U-shaped relationship: sleep less than 7.32 hours per night linked to reduced insulin sensitivity, while oversleeping beyond this threshold also appeared to have negative effects—especially for women, adults aged 40–59, and individuals with a BMI of 30 or higher.

Interestingly, the research also explored weekend catch-up sleep. For those sleeping less than 7 hours and 19 minutes during the week, adding 1–2 hours extra sleep on weekends improved insulin sensitivity. But exceeding two hours of catch-up sleep could actually worsen blood sugar control, suggesting moderation is key.

Experts weigh in

Dr. David Cutler, a board-certified family physician at Providence Saint John’s Health Center, commented:

“While 7.32 hours is ideal, weekend catch-up sleep is beneficial only in moderation. The take-home message is clear: aim for 7–8 hours per night and use weekends wisely to repay minor sleep debt.”

Dr. Kaushik Govindaraju, board-certified internist, added that the study offers objective guidance for clinicians and patients alike on sleep habits, catching up on rest, and mitigating metabolic risks.

The broader implications

With diabetes and obesity on the rise worldwide, simple interventions like sleep optimization could have major public health benefits. Experts emphasize that consistent, quality sleep is a low-cost, safe, and accessible strategy to improve metabolic health—impacting diet, exercise, and long-term disease prevention.

While the study doesn’t prove causation and has certain limitations—like reliance on self-reported sleep and lack of data for young adults and pregnant participants—it provides strong evidence that sleep is a powerful but often overlooked factor in preventing insulin resistance.
