What led to Mirpurkhas medical student’s tragic death? Committee investigates

KARACHI: The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mirpurkhas Range, has officially ordered a high-level inquiry into the death of Mrs. Fahmeeda d/o Intizar Hussain Laghari, a third-year medical student of Muhammad Medical College Mirpurkhas, according to a signed official notification issued on 9 April 2026.

The order states that during the night between 8 and 9 April 2026, the student died after shooting herself with a gunshot within the jurisdiction of PS Satellite Town Mirpurkhas.

To ensure what the notification describes as a transparent, comprehensive, and expeditious inquiry, a three-member senior police committee has been constituted.

The committee comprises:
• Syed Fida Hussain Shah, PSP, SSP Mirpurkhas — Chairman
• Mir Aftab Hussain Talpur, SP Headquarters Mirpurkhas — Member
• Ms Qurat-ul-Ain, PSP, ASP City Mirpurkhas — Member

According to the official terms of reference, the committee has been directed first to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.

The notification further authorizes the panel to examine any acts of commission or omission by any individuals involved that may lead to criminal liability, making the scope of the inquiry broader than a routine incident review.

A particularly significant component of the official order is the direction to meticulously analyze every pertinent factor with specific focus on any audio or written message left by the deceased.

This ensures that the inquiry remains rooted in documentary, forensic, and evidentiary material rather than unverified claims or public speculation.

The committee’s mandate also includes the identification of any procedural or systemic lapses, followed by recommendations for appropriate legal or disciplinary actions, where warranted by the findings.

This procedural clause is likely to be central to the final report, as investigators review the full chain of events, individual roles, and any failures in process that may emerge from the evidence.

The DIG office has directed that the report be submitted within 10 days, underlining the urgency and official seriousness attached to the matter.

At this stage, the official notification does not assign responsibility, mention motives, or draw conclusions, and the inquiry committee’s report is expected to serve as the primary basis for any further legal or departmental action.
