KARACHI: A recent assessment by the National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) Sindh has brought to light a serious human resource crisis at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), one of Karachi’s largest and busiest public hospitals. The NCHR survey found that JPMC urgently needs around 3,000 additional staff members, including doctors, nurses, technicians, paramedical staff, and support personnel, to maintain even basic patient care standards.

The NCHR delegation visited the facility to evaluate the state of patient care, medicine availability, and resource constraints. During the visit, the hospital management voiced their concerns, highlighting that critical understaffing is hampering effective service delivery at a time when patient inflow continues to rise.

"We are doing our best within limited resources, but the demand far exceeds our capacity. Urgent recruitment is vital to meet the current patient load," said the Executive Director of JPMC, who briefed the NCHR officials.

Despite the shortfall, the hospital continues to provide essential services across multiple departments. The delegation toured the Anti-Rabies Vaccination Unit and the Unknown Patients Ward, which shelters and treats unidentified individuals brought in by the police or ambulance services.

Acknowledgment of effort under pressure

Despite operating under tremendous pressure, the NCHR team commended JPMC’s management and frontline staff for their unwavering commitment to serving the public, particularly the underserved population that relies heavily on the facility for critical and emergency care.
