For gut health, food quality matters more than diet type, studies show

New global research reveals that diverse plant foods—not specific diets—play the biggest role in shaping a healthy gut microbiome.

For gut health, food quality is more important than type of diet

A growing body of scientific evidence suggests that gut health depends more on the quality and diversity of foods consumed than on whether a person follows a vegan, vegetarian, or omnivorous diet. Three new studies conducted across different populations and laboratory settings point to one consistent conclusion: eating a wide range of high-fiber plant foods is the key to supporting a resilient and disease-protective gut microbiome.

Study 1: Diverse plant foods boost gut microbiome—regardless of diet pattern

A large analysis of 21,000 participants across three countries found that omnivores who regularly consumed varied, high-fiber plant foods had gut microbiome profiles comparable to vegans and vegetarians.

Lead researcher Nicola Segata noted that “the greater the variety of plant-based foods we consume, the greater the diversity of beneficial microbes in our gut.”

The findings challenge long-held assumptions that plant-exclusive diets alone create superior gut health. Instead, food quality—specifically fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains—appears to play the defining role.

Study 2: Milk supports gut barrier health, while cheese reduces bacterial diversity

A second study examined the microbiome impact of dairy by analyzing colon biopsies from 34 adults. The results revealed a striking contrast:

  • Milk drinkers showed higher levels of microbes linked to gut barrier integrity and reduced inflammation.
  • Cheese eaters demonstrated lower overall microbial diversity, a marker generally associated with poorer gut resilience.

The findings suggest that not all dairy affects gut health equally.

Study 3: How fiber protects against cancer

A third investigation explored how microbial digestion of fiber lowers colorectal cancer risk. Researchers found that when gut bacteria break down plant fiber, they produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)—compounds that influence genes controlling cell growth.

Laboratory tests on human colon cells showed that SCFAs help trigger cancer cell death, offering a molecular explanation for decades of population-level data linking high-fiber diets with lower colorectal cancer rates.
