Mobile CT scanner development promises to close diagnostic gaps in rural America by delivering advanced imaging wherever it’s needed. Backed by a $25 million ARPA‑H contract, the initiative will design vehicle‑mounted CT scanners that weigh just 225 kilograms—over 1,700 kilograms lighter than conventional hospital units—and be ready for deployment by 2029.
Monash University’s Design Health Collab will spearhead the industrial design, ensuring the scanners are robust, shock‑resistant, and user‑friendly in mobile healthcare settings. Australian tech company Micro‑X contributes its Nano Electronic X‑ray (NEX) Technology, which miniaturizes X‑ray emitters to produce high‑quality, three‑dimensional images comparable to standard CT systems. Johns Hopkins University will lead clinical validation to guarantee diagnostic accuracy and patient safety.
The contract, awarded under ARPA‑H’s Platform Accelerating Rural Access to Distributed and InteGrated Medical care (PARADIGM) program, reflects a strategic push to eliminate healthcare disparities. Twelve multidisciplinary teams are addressing everything from secure data integration to vehicle engineering, with the first mobile CT scanners expected to be field‑tested by 2029.
Project lead Dr Nyein Chan Aung of Design Health Collab emphasizes the role of thoughtful design in making CT imaging truly mobile. “Medical technology has seen miniaturization from portable ultrasound to wearables, but CT remained the final frontier,” Dr Aung said. Professor Daphne Flynn, director of Design Health Collab, adds that the project underscores a commitment to equitable healthcare access regardless of geography.
Micro‑X CEO Kingsley Hall notes that the company’s NEX Technology pushes past legacy X‑ray constraints, enabling life‑saving diagnostics in remote areas. As the project advances, the partners also plan to adapt the design for use in Australia, expanding global reach and reinforcing their collective expertise, authority, and trust.
