Punjab health department recovers stolen government medicines worth Rs 1.7 billion

LAHORE: In a major crackdown against corruption in the healthcare sector, the Punjab Health Department has successfully recovered stolen government medicines worth Rs 1.7 billion in Dera Ghazi Khan.

According to the spokesperson for Primary and Secondary Healthcare, the department’s Drug Control Team conducted a raid at Sarwar Wali Rural Health Center in Dera Ghazi Khan, uncovering a massive stockpile of stolen medicines meant for public hospitals. The operation marks a significant step in combating corruption and ensuring that essential medicines reach the people who need them the most.

Three Storekeepers Arrested for Theft

Authorities have arrested three storekeepers allegedly involved in the theft. Initial investigations suggest that the stolen medicines were being siphoned off for illegal sale, depriving government hospitals and patients of life-saving drugs.

Government Vows Strict Action

Punjab’s Health Minister, Khawaja Imran Nazir, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling corruption in the healthcare sector. He stated:

“The theft of government medicines will not be tolerated. The vision of the Chief Minister is very clear—public medicine is the right of the people, and no one is allowed to exploit them. Strict action will be taken against those responsible.”
