WHO steps in as Khairpur mpox scare deepens after newborn deaths

KARACHI / KHAIRPUR: A troubling mpox outbreak in Sindh’s Khairpur district has triggered an emergency-style response after a cluster of newborn deaths and a rising number of suspected infections pushed health authorities into high alert. With concerns growing that the virus may already be spreading beyond district borders, the World Health Organization (WHO) has now stepped forward with a targeted vaccine offer aimed at containing what experts fear could become a wider public health crisis.

The development comes after health officials confirmed that mpox cases have increased in recent days in Khairpur, with additional “chickenpox-like” skin lesion cases being reported from nearby districts in Sindh. The situation has raised alarms over possible hospital-based transmission and lapses in infection prevention protocols, particularly in neonatal settings where the most vulnerable patients are being affected.

In response, the WHO has offered vaccines for controlled, high-priority use, with Sindh authorities clarifying that the doses will not be administered to the general public. Instead, the vaccination strategy will focus on frontline healthcare workers and other defined high-risk groups, in line with international outbreak containment guidelines.

The Sindh Health Department has simultaneously ordered all hospitals to establish 24/7 information desks, improve real-time case coordination, and strengthen referral pathways with emergency responders including Rescue 1122. The move is aimed at accelerating triage, isolation, and rapid transfer of suspected cases before further transmission occurs.

Adding to the urgency, the Director General Health Sindh has directed hospitals to immediately create dedicated mpox response units, allowing facilities to separate suspected and confirmed cases from general patient areas. Health officials believe this step is critical to reducing hospital-acquired spread, especially after reports suggested some neonatal infections may have been linked to unsterilized medical equipment and weak infection control measures.

The human toll has made the story even more alarming. Officials say seven newborn deaths were initially linked to the Khairpur cluster, though expert reviews indicate that some of the infants were already severely premature, underweight, or malnourished, making them exceptionally vulnerable. Even so, the presence of mpox in multiple neonatal cases has transformed the outbreak into one of the most closely watched infectious disease emergencies in Sindh this year.

Public health experts say the bigger warning sign may not just be the virus itself, but what the outbreak reveals about infection control gaps, delayed laboratory confirmation, and neonatal ward preparedness in district-level hospitals. With WHO support now on the table, the coming days may determine whether Khairpur’s crisis remains localized—or becomes a broader provincial challenge.
