Pakistan bans pharma-sponsored foreign trips for doctors

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations & Coordination Islamabad has implemented a ban on sponsored foreign tours for doctors and hospital staff by companies. This decision comes as part of the ministry's commitment to upholding ethical standards within the healthcare sector.

In a recent communication addressed to hospitals under federal government jurisdiction, the ministry emphasized the necessity for a strict protocol regarding foreign travel requests. Henceforth, all requests for Ex-Pakistan leave must be accompanied by an affidavit from the concerned officers affirming that their travel is not sponsored by any private company or donor, and is not aimed at attending conferences or seminars.

In parallel, the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has introduced a new code of conduct for pharmaceutical companies and doctors, further reinforcing ethical guidelines. This initiative, sanctioned by the federal government, underscores the commitment to fostering transparency and accountability within the pharmaceutical and medical fraternity.

Under the new regulations, pharmaceutical companies are barred from covering the travel expenses of doctors' family members or any other individuals. Moreover, doctors are required to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their respective institutions before being eligible for foreign travel reimbursements, as outlined in the DRAP notification.

These proactive measures by the government signify a commendable effort towards promoting ethical practices and preventing potential conflicts of interest in the healthcare sector. By enforcing stringent regulations, Pakistan aims to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity, ultimately benefiting patients and ensuring trust in the healthcare system.
