Baby girl born aboard moving train as swift action saves lives in Karachi

KARACHI: In a remarkable display of emergency response and teamwork, a baby girl was safely delivered aboard the Rehman Baba Express (Train No. 47-Up) during its journey from Karachi Cantonment to Tando Adam, after railway police and onboard doctors acted without delay.

According to officials of the Pakistan Railways Police, a female passenger traveling in coach number 08 went into sudden labor due to complications while the train was in motion. As the train experienced a delay along the route, the woman delivered the baby inside the coach before reaching the next station.

Head Constable Shoaib Raza, who was part of the train’s security detail, immediately called for medical assistance. Two doctors traveling on the train responded and provided initial care to both mother and newborn, ensuring a safe delivery under challenging conditions.

After the birth, the doctors advised that the mother was not in a condition to continue her journey. Railway police promptly coordinated with Rescue 1122 for emergency support. Due to the absence of appropriate delivery and neonatal care facilities at nearby hospitals along the route, the rescue team recommended shifting both mother and child to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Karachi, for further treatment and observation.

Railway police officials later confirmed that both the mother and the newborn baby girl were in satisfactory condition upon transfer to the hospital.

Healthcare and safety officials praised the timely intervention by police personnel and doctors, noting that such coordinated action can make a critical difference in emergencies that occur during long-distance travel. The incident has highlighted the importance of trained staff, public cooperation, and rapid medical response in safeguarding maternal and neonatal health in public transport settings.
