Karachi medico-legal sections rocked by corruption allegations and bribery scandals

KARACHI: The three main medico-legal sections of Karachi are facing serious allegations of corruption, bribery, and misuse of authority, raising deep concerns about transparency and public trust in the city’s justice and healthcare systems.

According to credible sources, Police Surgeon Karachi, Dr. Summaiya Syed, has come under criticism for alleged arbitrary postings and questionable practices within the medico-legal framework. Stakeholders fear these practices are compromising the integrity of medico-legal reports, which play a critical role in police investigations and court proceedings.

At Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, an inquiry has been launched against Dr. Inder Kumar after a viral video surfaced showing him allegedly accepting bribes from an injured youth in exchange for preparing a favorable medical report.

In another disturbing revelation, a helper personally appointed by Dr. Syed at Civil Hospital Karachi was caught taking bribes while sitting in a vehicle, openly providing manipulated reports against payment. Witnesses claim that some helpers have even gone so far as to occupy the official seats of Medico-Legal Officers (MLOs), preparing medical reports without any professional authority.

Medico-legal system turned into a ‘marketplace’

Reports from Civil Hospital, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital suggest that sections meant for justice delivery have allegedly been converted into a marketplace, where reports are issued based on bribes rather than facts.
