New research is shedding light on how diet may shape brain health — and whether damage from unhealthy eating can actually be reversed.

A review of animal studies suggests that switching from high-fat or high-sugar diets to healthier eating patterns may improve memory performance. However, the findings also raise concern that not all diet-related brain changes may be equally reversible.

What the research looked at

Scientists analyzed 27 preclinical studies involving rodent models that were fed diets high in sugar, fat, or both for at least two weeks. Some animals were later switched back to a normal diet, while others continued on unhealthy eating patterns.

Cognitive performance was then measured after at least 24 hours.

Sugar vs fat: a key difference

The results showed an important distinction:

  • Rodents switched from a high-fat diet showed signs of memory improvement
  • Those exposed to high-sugar or combined high-fat + high-sugar diets did not fully recover cognitive function
  • Researchers suggest that sugar may trigger more persistent changes in the brain, possibly linked to stronger inflammatory responses.

Why sugar may have lasting effects

Experts believe high-sugar diets could affect memory systems more deeply than fat alone, potentially due to increased neuroinflammation and disruption in brain signaling pathways involved in learning and memory.

What this means for humans

Neurologists caution that while these findings come from animal studies, they align with human research linking poor diet to reduced brain volume and memory decline over time.

Experts emphasize that brain structure and metabolic pathways are similar across species, suggesting that dietary improvements may still benefit humans — but may not fully reverse long-term damage.

Prevention may matter more than reversal

Medical specialists highlight a key takeaway: improving diet is beneficial, but preventing long-term exposure to unhealthy foods may be more effective than trying to reverse damage later.

Brain aging, memory loss, and dementia risk remain major global health concerns, and diet is one of the few modifiable factors that can influence long-term cognitive health.
