Nanotechnology-based military uniforms may soon shield soldiers from gunfire, experts reveal at Karachi workshop

KARACHI: In a significant leap forward for defense and biomedical sciences, nanotechnology-based military uniforms capable of protecting soldiers from gunshots may soon become a reality. This revelation was made by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Raza Shah, Director of the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) at the University of Karachi, during a specialized workshop on Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM).

The two-day workshop, titled “Uses and Applications of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM),” was held at the LEJ National Science Information Center, University of Karachi. It was a collaborative initiative of the Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research (PCMD), the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), the UNESCO Chair on Medicine and Bioorganic Natural Product Chemistry, and the Sindh Innovation, Research, and Education Network (SIREN).

“The impact of nanotechnology across sectors like healthcare, agriculture, materials science, and defense is revolutionary,” said Prof. Shah.

Key takeaways from the workshop:

  • Nanotech in defense: Prof. Shah announced that future military uniforms integrated with nanotechnology could provide protection against bullets by enhancing material strength at the microscopic level.
  • Wider applications: Nanotechnology enables targeted drug delivery, early disease detection, nano-fertilizers, and pest-resistant agriculture, boosting energy efficiency and food security.
  • Understanding AFM: AFM, a precision tool in nanoscale imaging and force measurement, is pivotal in measuring properties like magnetism, height, and surface friction at the atomic level. It surpasses the limits of traditional optical microscopy and works effectively on both non-biological materials and live cell surfaces.

More than 30 participants attended from institutions such as Dow University of Health Sciences, Jinnah Sindh Medical University, Federal Urdu University, NIBGE, National Institute of Virology, and the University of Nizwa, Oman.

Workshop trainers included Dr. Maqsood Ahmed Chotani, Ms. Saira Yasmeen, and Ms. Tasmina from ICCBS. Prof. Dr. Sammer Yousuf served as the workshop coordinator.

Prof. Shah emphasized the need to promote scientific innovation in Pakistan, noting that such training events can equip researchers with the tools necessary to harness nanotechnology's transformative power in real-world applications.
