PMDC to launch globally recognized CPD system in Pakistan in partnership with ACCME

PMDC developing global-standard CPD system for healthcare professionals in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) is set to implement a structured and globally recognized continuing professional development (CPD) system for medical and dental professionals in Pakistan. The initiative is being developed in close collaboration with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), a U.S.-based nonprofit that sets the benchmark for medical education accreditation globally.

As part of the development process, a senior delegation from the ACCME visited the PMDC headquarters in Islamabad to participate in a series of strategy sessions and working discussions aimed at establishing a CPD regulatory framework that aligns with international standards. The sessions spanned two and a half days and brought together stakeholders from major academic and medical institutions across the country.

The interactive discussions focused on evaluating global trends in CPD, identifying critical needs in Pakistan’s healthcare education, and designing a framework that promotes continuous learning, ethical accountability, and improved patient outcomes. The initiative aims to ensure that all licensed healthcare professionals in Pakistan remain up-to-date with clinical knowledge, evolving practices, and regulatory requirements throughout their careers.

The new CPD system is being designed as evidence-based, competency-driven, and patient-centered. It will integrate a range of professional learning activities including online courses, workshops, clinical training modules, and performance improvement initiatives. The system will also emphasize measurable outcomes to ensure quality assurance and enhanced care delivery.

According to PMDC President Prof. Dr. Rizwan Taj, the implementation of this CPD framework marks a “transformative milestone” for the country’s medical sector. “A nationally integrated and globally aligned CPD system will not only enhance the professional competency of our healthcare providers but will also elevate the credibility and mobility of Pakistani doctors and dentists at the regional and global levels,” he said.

The move is expected to:

• Enhance public trust in medical professionals
• Align Pakistan’s medical education with global accreditation standards
• Promote professional mobility and employability of healthcare providers internationally

With the support of local and global partners, PMDC is now finalizing the regulatory structure and digital tools required for rollout. The new system will eventually be integrated into the licensing and renewal processes for all registered practitioners across the country.

This initiative comes as part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to raise its medical education infrastructure and ensure the healthcare workforce remains competent, adaptive, and aligned with international standards.
